You spend the next few years in a constant state of meditation and training. You are taught the history of the village and how to create prayer rolls, written on dried seaweed, and the proper incantations to make when attaching it to the God shell. You are taught how to bring fire with only a word and a gesture and how to wield the sacred Kol-Dakoth sickle in combat. You get to sleep closer to the cook fires then other boys your youth, and no longer have to range for miles each day. You spend much of your day close to the village and perhaps that has softened you somehow but you know that there have been benefits.

After a time the third moon begins to rise, signalling the start of the new year. Such a time is good for new ventures, so the elders say. You are young and perhaps it is early but they believe it is time for you to undertake the tests and ordeal that will give you the right to become a true protector of the God Shell. You are anointed with sea water and charchoal and brought into the black hut in the dead of night. The black hut is the biggest in the village and also the furthest from the centre. Noone goes to the black hut except for on the new year, as the third moon rises. Now it is packed, stinking of sweat and smoke. You are brought in, fresh from the sea and daubed in the holy sigels of the village and led to the centre of the hut. You can see the faces of your family and friends in the dark, watching you intently.
In the centre of the hut is a stake. Tied to it is one of the stonemen, captured purposefully for the ritual. His skin is grey as the cliffs that overlook your village and he looks at you with large, dark eyes. He is agitated, afraid and angry, surrounded by enemies. The elders come forth and speak but you don’t listen to them. You pray to your gods and stare into the stoneman’s eyes. Someone presses something into your hand and you know that it is a sickle, old and rusted, brought here from the homeland made of glass. The stoneman is cut free and given a club. He seems to understand what is expected from him because he does not try to run. He stands still for a moment and then comes for you, snarling, his black eyes full of hate for only one of you is going to leave the hut alive.
